Recalcitrant carbohydrates after enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated lignocellulosic biomass
BACKGROUND To reduce the cost of the enzymes for the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, two main strategies have been followed: one, the reduction of enzyme dosing by the use of more efficient and stable enzymatic cocktails; another, to include accessory enzymes in the cocktails to increase yields by reducing the recalcitrant carbohydrate fraction remaining at the end of the process. To gui...
متن کاملCreation of an ultra scale‐down bioreactor mimic for rapid development of lignocellulosic enzymatic hydrolysis processes
BACKGROUND Cellulosic bioethanol processes involve several steps, all of which require experimental optimisation. A significant aid to this research would be a validated ultra scale-down (USD) model that could be used to perform rapid, wide ranging screening and optimisation experiments using limited materials under process relevant conditions. RESULTS In this work, the use of 30 mL shaken co...
متن کاملAn Integrated Process of Ionic Liquid Pretreatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Lignocellulosic Biomass with Immobilised Cellulase
An integrated process of lignocellulosic biomass conversion was set up involving pretreatment by an ionic liquid (IL) and hydrolysis of cellulose using cellulase immobilised by the sol-gel method, with recovery and reuse of both the IL and biocatalyst. As all investigated ILs, regardless of the nature of the anion and the cation, led to the loss of at least 50% of the hydrolytic activity of cel...
متن کاملOptimization of Endoglucanase Production by Trichoderma harzianum KUC1716 and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Lignocellulosic Biomass
Trichoderma species are widely used for the commercial production of cellulolytic enzymes. In the present investigation, medium components were optimized using a central composite design and response surface methodology to produce endoglucanase (EG) from Trichoderma harzianum KUC1716. From the various medium components tested, cellulose, soy peptone, and thiamine HCl were selected as the optima...

technology was selected as a key area for biomass technology development in the 1980s, and the US Department of Energy (DOE) has actively supported the scale up of ethanol production since the Office of Alcohol Fuels was created in the DOE after the ‘energy crisis’ of the 1970s. Although biological conversion of cellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals through enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose...
